Bright lights, loud music, and the shrill shrieks of excited youths; the chaotic glowing streets of Ximending can be overwhelming to the inexperienced. An excellent way to take a break, while in Taipei's youth entertainment district, is by slipping into Ximen Beer Bar for pint of craft brew.

Located along Ximen's famed movie theater street, Ximen Beer Bar is a small but comfortable craft beer bar dedicated to serving the best beer that Taipei has to offer.  With a rotating draft beer selection from six taps, Ximen Beer Bar stocks great local craft beer starting at NT$200, and Taiwan Beer at just NT$130.  In addition to beer, the back-bar holds a selection of sparkling wines, champagnes and spirits.

The staff are friendly and happy to pour you a pint, though they may not make an effort to engage in conversation.   The bar is small and intimate with the majority of the seating bar-side, so it wouldn't be too difficult to strike up a conversation with fellow intoxication enthusiasts.
Ximen Beer Bar's best asset is it's location, adjacent from some of Taipei's busiest movie theaters. This is an excellent place to have a delicious beer before, or after, catching a movie.  As the number of craft beer bars in the Ximending area continues to rise, Ximen Beer Bar is well on it's way to becoming a Ximen mainstay.

The student neighborhoods of Shida and Taida have seen the highs and lows of their local bar scene.   Residents of the area had seemingly won their battle against fun and festivity as many of the bars in the area were forced to permanently shut their doors. However, In recent years the area is experiencing a resurgence.   Several bars now line the high traffic thoroughfare, Xinhai road; one of these is the Belgian beer bar, Another Brick.  While it is located near two of Taipei's most prominent universities, Another Brick reminds us that "we don't need no education," since, we are all "just another brick in the wall."

Another Brick's musical theme doesn't stop at the name, the back wall of the bar is lined with  vinyl record covers.  The remaining bar decor is comfortable and welcoming. A long bar-top offers seating to pair or individuals, while several tables provide an intimate atmosphere for groups.

Another brick posseses a large selection of Belgian craft beers.   With 15 or more bottled Belgian beers available, a Belgian beer lover is unlikely to leave thirsty. They also have two draft taps, one with Stella Artois, and the other with a different Belgian beer.  Beer prices are very reasonable, with bottled beer and draft starting at just NT$180. In addition to beer, Another Brick offers wine, liquor and a limited selection of cocktails.

Another Brick is comfortable bar with a great selection of beer.  An excellent addition to the university neighborhood, Another Brick does its part to break down the barriers that have have stood in the way of Shida's nightlife.

MRT: Technology Building

Hours:  Mon - Thur  17:00 - 00:00
              Fri - Sat 17:00 - 01:00
              Sun: Closed

In a dark and narrow alley in a quiet corner of Taipei, sits a pleasant little bar filled with delicious craft beer.   The Local is a neighborhood pub offering up North American craft beer in comfortable setting with friendly people.

The Local is a direct descendant of Taipei's first North American style craft beer bar, Beer and Cheese.   Founded by the same two beer enthusiasts, The local maintains the styling, feel, and exquisite beer of the their prior bars; however, The Local concentrates all of that into an intimate and unassuming little bar.
The Local features six rotating draft beer taps and a large fridge of bottled and canned beer.   While The Local stocks a large number of very good beers the vast majority of them come from just a few breweries, and despite it's name, The Local's selection of locally produced beer is extremely limited.  As Taiwan's craft beer industry has grown and now produces many great beers, one may wish to try a few of them at their local pub.  The prices of both Draft and bottled/canned beer start at around NT$200.
The staff at The Local are friendly and knowledgeable and they are ready and willing to offer advice and suggestions to help you make your beer selection.  Many of the patrons  at The Local are foreign exchange students and expats.  The bar itself is relatively small, but features several TVs for screening international sporting events and even Game of Thrones episodes on Monday nights.
The Local is a cool and amicable neighborhood pub with friendly people and high quality imported craft beer.  Everyone needs a local bar, and if you're fortunate enough, The Local may be yours.

MRT: Guting / Dongmen

Hours: Monday - Sunday 13:00 - 23:00

With a name that includes the word "coffee", one would be excused for assuming that Libero Coffee is little more than your local java joint.  But don't be fooled by the deceptive name, Libero is an excellent bar with an outstanding collection of whiskey.

Libero is comfortably seated in the Shida student neighborhood.  While appearing as a simple coffee shop from the exterior, the interior reveals an impressive bar and deeper still, gives way to a luxurious whisky lounge in the back room.

Libero offers coffee, craft beer, and an extensive assortment of whiskey.  Whiskey's range in price from $400 all the way to $2500, while most craft beers are priced around $250.  The service staff is very friendly and helpful and happy to offer recommendations in both English and Chinese.

Libero's best feature is their ambiance.   Red velour seats and impressive chandeliers adorn every room, and the entire bar has the style and feel of a very exquisite and comfortable home.

Libero is so much more than a coffee shop; it is an refined beer whiskey bar that should never be overlooked.  Libero is a must visit for NTNU students or any whiskey lovers in Taipei, or even Taiwan.

Roxy J

Address: Daan District, No. 22,  Heping East Rd.  / 和平東路一段 22 號
Taipei, Taiwan

MRT: Guting

Hours:  11:30am - 4:00am

The latest contribution to a more than 30 year legacy of Taipei bars and nightclubs, Roxy J is a throwback and a homage to the original Roxy bar, which stood on the exact same soil as Roxy J does today.    The original Roxy established a precedent for the style and attitude of all future Roxy bars, and this newest addition, named for the owner's wife, does not fall far from the Roxy tree.

Roxy maintains every aspect of the Roxy feel, with vinyls lining the back wall that DJs who have been spinning since the original Roxy will happily play on request.   The rest of the walls are graffitied with the most renowned musical artists from past and present.  Several panels on the wall pay homage to the Roxy legacy featuring the logos of Roxy bars that have came and went.

The staff at Roxy J is as friendly as a Roxy patron would have come to expect, and the crowd is a mix of loyal Roxy mainstays and a new generation of potential 'Roxyers'. Drink selection is, disappointingly, largely unchanged from past Roxy bars.  While more and more students bars have adopted the craft beer trend, Roxy J only carries Taiwan Beer and Heineken.   Classic cocktails and highballs are also available.   In addition to alcoholic drinks, Roxy offers coffee beverages from their state of the art espresso machine.

Roxy J is a nice bar and cafe, but it remains to be seen what Roxy J can bring to the ShiDa neighborhood that makes it any different from Roxy Rocker (which is only a block away).  On the surface, Roxy J is a great spot to hang out and request your favorites on vinyl; however, one can't help but wonder why they vinyl room couldn't have happily remained in the back of Roxy Rocker.

Spring Break on the Beach 2017

While for many Taiwanese families, the coming of the Tomb-sweeping Day holiday means paying respect to ancestors and family outings; however for party-loving locals and foreigners far away from their families, it means the biggest and best party weekend of the year.

Living up to its reputation, Spring Break on the Beach 2017 was a hell of a party! The best DJ's from North to South of Taiwan joined major international acts to blow the roof off of Kenting's Chateau Beach Resort.

As party-goers from all parts of Taipei continued to trickled into Kenting, the first day of the party kicked-off! By 6 pm the beach was bumping and by the time day-one headliner, Kryoman, took the stage it was practically causing earthquakes, island-wide. Kryoman, aka Andrew Moore, took to the decks, as ten-foot tall, smoke spouting robots rocked out on the stage. The awesome visual display alongside were sure to be a memorable experience for anyone still in a state to record memories at that point in the night.

The second day was well underway by mid-afternoon Sunday; sports, tanning and drinking, take over the beach in daylight hours. The party turned all the way up as the sunset, and all-you-can-drink beer from 5-8pm ensured that everyone was in party-mode. Dutch DJ Headhunterz, headlined after an excellent line-up of Taiwan-based DJs.   Headhunterz brought pounding hardstyle electro tunes practically liquefying the sand on the beach.

  • As partiers tire and wear out throughout the weekend, the final night of Spring Break On The Beach typically has lower attendance than previous nights; however, it is also consistently the wildest! The third and final night featured Australian electro duo, Bombs Away. With a little more space to dance, and the warmest weather of the weekend, Bombs Away had the party Lit!

Spring Break on the Beach 2017, lived up to its legacy as the best party of the year in Taiwan.   As competition rises from other major music events throughout Taiwan, the On The Beach crew has continued to up their game to stay well ahead of the pack.    It's only been one week since the party, but we are already counting down the days until next year!

              Sun 12:00 - 21:30

Since opening in 2013, Taipei's Maji Square has provided topnotch food, arts and entertainment to visitors of the Yuanshan Expo Park.  Many of the stores and vendors in the square sell artisanal products, however until the opening of Crafted Beer & Co. there had been a notable lack of artisanal beer.

Crafted is a small, but well stocked bottle shop and bar. They carry a wide selection with more than 100 imported and domestically produced craft beers and ciders. Draft beer comes courtesy of 4 taps.  Beers are fairly reasonably priced, with domestic bottles starting at NT$200 and draft pints starting at NT$250; however, there are no low budget options for penny pinchers.

It's location adjacent to Maji Square's old-fashioned merry-go-round, makes for a pleasant view from the shop's window-side seating. Additionally, as it is footsteps away from the popular alternative nightclub, Triangle, Crafted is an ideal predrink spot for beer lovers.

Bringing American brewing methods to Taiwan, 23 Brewing, broke new ground in Taiwan's beer scene as one of the first local beer producers of bitter North American style craft beer. 23 brewing has long been a front-runner among the independent brewers in Taipei, and in order to showcase their excellent products, they have opened a friendly and comfortable bar.

23 Public is located on Xinhai road, directly between the Shida and Taida university neighborhoods, in a perfect spot to draw in thirsty students.   The brew-house is well designed with natural elements of wood and stone.   23 Public may seem like a fairly small bar but a rear stairwell to the reads gives way to a large basement floor, perfect for hosting events or watching international sporting events.

While the delectable beer may have you wishing that 23 Public had 23 taps of beer, they have a respectable selection poured on 12 taps, with a hand-pump tap available on "Real Ale Fridays". 23 public stocks a strong lineup of their own pale ales, IPAs, stouts and sours, complemented by Orion draft and a rotating lineup of guest taps.   A small selection of tasty food and bar snacks are also available to pair with your pints.

23 Public is a testament to the recent success of Taiwan's craft beer scene. The mere fact that several passionate home brewers were able establish a successful brewery and subsequent bar in just a few years speaks volumes about Taipei's thirst for craft beer. With great beer and friendly service, 23 Public does well to satisfy that thirst.

The famed Danish brewers Mikkeller have opened a wonderful bar in Taipei. MikkellerTaipei is located in a heritage building in the historic Dadaocheng neighborhood and brings Danish beer and style to one of Taipei's oldest neighborhoods.
