Saturday - International Night

Most nights see the club halfway to two-thirds full, generating a sub-par experience for most club-goers.   On the busy nights, Club M is an exciting international venue.

With over three decades of partying under its belt establishments can compete with the popularity or longevity of Roxy 99.

The mix of Western music and cheap drinks makes this place one of the most popular destinations for night life in Taipei, especially for foreigners. As a nightclub with a bar-like atmosphere and decor, Roxy 99 provides a laid back and fun night out in Taipei.  The new venue has 2 floors with the upstairs being far quieter and relaxed.  Other major upgrade of the new location is that the bathrooms are clean and comfortable, a far-cry from the cesspools of old-99.

The club formerly known as Club Wax underwent a quick reno and a name change to become the slightly new and slightly improved Box Nightclub.

Not the prettiest or poshest venue on Taipei's club scene, Box benefit's from its location near to Shida University and a rowdy student crowd.

Box Nightclub attracts many university students and expats.  The all-you-can-drink club offers plenty of specials such as a Student Party Fridays, Mini Dress Saturdays, and even Foreigner Wednesdays when all you can drink is just NT$350 for men with a foreign ID (NT$600 for locals) and NT$100 for any women.  Weekend cover charge for males is NT$600 and NT$350 for females.

A wide range of cocktails and shots are available with the all-you-can-drink service but beer is limited to cans of Blue Girl.

Box Nightclub is a bit grittier than the expensive Xinyi clubs, but it’s an enjoyable party scene filled mostly with crowds of students and younger foreigners.

Prozac Balcony 百憂解陽台

MRT: Liùzhānglí Station

Hours: Mon - Thu: 11:30 - 01:30
            Fri - Sat: 11:30 - 02:30

Prozac balcony positions itself as a "Coffee Bistro" but I assure you it offers far more than caffeine to stimulate your senses.  A fully stocked bar serving up inventive cocktails and imported beers makes Prozac Balcony more than the neighborhood coffee shop.

The interior decor eludes to a British theme with a red London phone booth featured prominently.  The small bar/cafe is cramped on busy night especially on weekends when live music acts fill the back corner.

The staff in friendly and the mostly Taiwanese patrons are a social bunch.  As it is a bistro, a full menu of meals is on offer; however, prozac is not on the menu...

Footsteps from the historic YongKang Street is a small but comfortable whiskey bar.  A cheerful bar staff with limited English abilities serves up a wide range of imported whiskeys.  Ice-cube's are shaved to order to perfectly all whiskey-less space in your glass.

The owner is happy to have a drink or two with his patrons which only adds to his friendliness which often increases throughout the night.  It's a nice place to grab a glass of fine whiskey and smoke a cigar in the company of fellow enthusiasts.

Address: 85 Bade Road, Sec.2  Daan District Taipei City
八德路二段85號;

MRT: Zhongxiao-XinSheng

Hours: 5:30-11:30 p.m

Taiwan Beer’s live music restaurant is an excellent place to spend an evening before hitting the clubs.  Located on site at the brewery, the short stroll through the operational facility is perfect inspiration for a night of beer and live entertainment.

The minimum order of $250 per person shouldn't be hard to hit, especially if you're interested in sampling the pricey beer-snack menu.  The menu features an assortment of sharable dishes many of which are cooked with Taiwan Beer.

The best nights to visit would certainly be Friday or Saturday when rowdy dance and sing along with high-energy cover bands to Mando-pop and western classics.

             Fri - Sat: 21:00 - 03:00
             Sun: 21:00 - 02:00

This bar is definitely an oldie but a goodie.  Oldie Goodie has a long history and was a pioneer on Taipei's live music scene.  The second floor bar which is situated in a building on the corner or Roosevelt and Shida is  a great place to catch some live music without paying an entry fee.

Live musical acts run the gambit from country to pop and an good selection of reasonably priced beers and cocktails makes Oldie Goodie a great place for a relatively inexpensive but, for the most part, low-key night out.

While O.G. has a long history, it's popularity has faded in recent years and it struggles to draw a large crowd most nights of the week.  If you 're in the area and in the mood for a chilled out night with some live music, Oldie Goodie is a great place for you.

MRT: Zhongxiao-Fuxing

Hours: Monday to Saturday 18:30~02:00

The wooden shack on near the corner of Civic Boulevard and Fuxing conceals one of Taipei's best Japanese pub atmospheres. Orion beer on tap, along with a large assortment of Japanese sake, liquor, and shochu. Their house specialty is a refreshing pomelo beer, which is both delicious and very reasonably priced.  Yakitori and other izakaya eats on offer pair perfectly with the beer and sake.

The atmosphere of Li Tun is awesome and unique. The interior walls are plastered with fliers of artistic events and rock concerts while a projector  screens Japanese music videos and movies on the shack wall.  With tables made from beer-crates, the outdoor seating, directly on Civic Boulevard,  is one of the best places for an unpretentious outdoor drink in the city center.

Overall, Li Tun is an excellent place, any night of the week! (except Sunday)

In a quaint location, above a traditional Chinese medicine store, this well-hidden bar is a popular student post-studies, drinking spot. Just footsteps away from ShiDa, international and local students alike have long frequented this upstairs bar making it a NTNU neighborhood mainstay.

The walls are adorned with black and white photos and seemingly random American memorabilia which may provide a Western atmosphere to the local crowd; however, North American foreigners are likely to be turned off by the TGIFridays style "flare".

They serve a vast variety of cocktails, beers, carbonated drinks, or just coffee; and also bar snacks such as fries or chips and salsa. Prices are relatively affordable but a bit higher than you're average student bar.

Thanks to its convenient location near Taida, Cafe Odeon is a popular student hangout. The extremely laid-back and cozy atmosphere provide and excellent setting to sample the vast selection of imported beers.

The friendly bartenders and servers are a wealth on knowledge on the beers they serve and are happy to provide recommendations.   Beer prices tend to be on the the high-side (starting at around NT$190 per bottle) but many a beer connoisseur would argue that the superior products warrant the high prices.   That said, it's not an ideal place to pound pints on the cheap.

As the name states, Odeon is a Café and appropriately offers a range excellently prepared western dishes.

For it's home-style comforts and one of Taipei's best beer selections, Café Odeon is a great place to spend a mellow night in the Gongguan area.

A popular pub for both expats and locals alike, On Tap is a great pub to grab a pint in the Zhongxiao East Road area.  On Tap is branded as Taipei's 'only real pub' although the validity of such a claim may be up for debate.

The bar is among the best places in Taipei to watch sports - especially Premier League and NFL games - because it is large and airy and has many large screens within view.  In addition to the TV's, On Tap has has a variety of entertainment options; a towering Jenga that stands over 2 meters, a giant Connect 4, numerous board games, and of course, pool and darts.

A menu of 7 Draft Beers & Ciders along with a full range of cocktails might be entertainment enough for some drinkers and nightly happy hour prices  (Mon-Fri 5pm-8pm, Sat & Sun 11am-8pm: beer and cocktails from $90) ensure that drinking is an affordable activity.

Regular prices for draft are as follows: Carlsberg $120, San Miguel $140, Stella Artois $150, Abbot Ale $170, Stowford Press Cider $200, Guinness $210, Hoegaarden $220.

In contrast to the common trend, Wednesday is Lads' Night at On Tap, with happy hour prices all night.

Just outside of the Red House in Ximending is one of the best areas in Taipei to sit outside and enjoy a beer. Away from the bright lights and crowds of teenagers in search of the latest trends, there is a completely different world made up of bars and underwear stores catering to gay men.

While these bars are aimed at a predominantly gay crowd, there are usually just as many straight people enjoying a drink on weekends.  Most of the bars in this area offer great specials on beers allowing you to get 3 cold Heinekens for as little as NT$180.

Mudan is just one of many patio bars to choose from, notable because they have a friendly staff, free wifi and a great selection of cocktails.

In short, if you’re looking for a place to spend a chill evening with friends, but aren't interested in clubs or smoky bars, Ximending probably has something for you.

A Taipei installment of the famed Hong Kong institution, Carnegies Taipei is a well-known expat haunt with one of the city's best patios.

Since opening in Taipei in 2001, Carnegie’s established itself as the leading western bar & restaurant in the city. In addition to  ‘club’ nights where patrons are encouraged to show their dancing skills by dancing on the bar, Carnegie’s has an impressive western food menu, including a wide selection of steaks and pastas.
Carnegie’s is also reputed for its menu.

The drink list comprises 366 shooters, a huge range of cocktails, wines, spirits and beers. A resident DJ from the UK plays each night and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays the party goes on until the sun comes up!

While Carnegie's still gets rowdy for special events, it's reputation as a place for older-male expats seeking young locals has driven much of the young crowd away.   Carnegie's saving grace is it's patio which is just about the nicest place in the city for an afternoon beer.

Room 18 is one of Taipei's swankiest nightspots.  Located in Taipei's premier nightlife and shopping district, Xinyi, 18 is the place to be seen rubbing shoulders with Taipei's beautiful youths.

The atmosphere is hip, young and happening. The DJs pump a wide range of electro and hip hop tunes, and the notably young and attractive staff give the club a very "in" atmosphere. It has a room for both techno/house and hip hop, the latter has a dancefloor that is packed to the brim on weekends.

They stock a good array of whisky and brandy but like most nightclubs in Taipei, the beer selection is very limited. Drink prices can be pretty steep (around NT$200) but this place is a cut above and the bartenders are fast with getting you your drink.  Cover charge is a steep 700 NT for both guys and girls (includes 2 drinks).

When you weigh it all up, the high costs of drinks and entrance can be worth it for a nightclub that is a cut above the rest and potentially worth the hit to your wallet if a young, posh atmosphere is exactly what you're looking for.

One of Taipei's biggest and best; Luxy is a classic mainstay nightclub that provides some of the best entertainment in the city.   Luxy has an impressive layout beginning with a Mission Impossible style laser grid for patrons to bend through immediately as they exit the elevator.

The club expands outward into 2 massive rooms each with a large dance floor.  The larger of the two has stage which is regularly adorned with sexy scantily clad dancers while world-class performers take the stage for special events.

The smaller of the two rooms is most often far less crowded albeit equally as impressive as a DJ spins electronic music from their perch in a LED lit wall above the dance floor.

Award winning bartenders make a good selection of drinks, and cocktails while the beer selection is mostly limited to Heineken.

Cover charge is a bargain at only NT$400 weekends/ NT$300 Wednesday before 11pm (including 2 drink tickets)!
After 11pm the cost is NT$700 for everyone, excluding Wednesdays when ladies are free and men are just NT$600..

Green Door 綠門

Address:  No. 6, Déhuì St, Jhongshan District, Taipei City / 德惠街6號,中山區,台北市

MRT: Zhongshan Elementary School

Hours:

In business for over 35 years, this Combat Zone mainstay has been entertaining patrons since it was made popular by American military personnel stationed in Taiwan during Vietnam War.

A nostalgic atmosphere perseveres despite changes to the area around it.  Many bars in the neighborhood have seen their business gradually decline, but the Green Door maintains a dedicated crowd of regulars.

The traditional British-style bar offers traditional British meals, such as fish & chips, Yorkshire Pudding, Steak & Kidney Pie, and many others.  A decent selection of imported macro brews in addition to the standard bottled Taiwan Beers ($150 Classic/$180 Gold Medal).  Be forewarned: prices at this bar do not include the 10% service charge.
